Summary
In just three novels, Michael Nava has established himself as one of the most accomplished, literate suspense writers working today. The Hidden Law, the fourth novel in Nava's award-winning series, sets gay Chicano lawyer Henry Rios searching Los Angeles's underside for a powerful politician's murderer. State Senator Gus Pena has far too many enemies. In the fierce, competitive world of LA politics, savage rivalries are, of course, a given, especially for a suavely corrupt veteran like Pena, who will do anything to become mayor. He has also created enemies in the family of the elderly man he killed while driving drunk and even in his own family, which he has long treated with disdainful brutality. But when he's gunned down by a shadowy figure wearing a Chicano gang's colors, the suspect the cops arrest is Michael Ruiz, a bitter, confused teenager with whom Pena had fought violently at the drug rehab center they both attended. Ruiz proudly confesses to Pena's murder and refuses to help Rios defend him, but Rios detects a flaw in the teenager's description of Pena's killing that points to an even more unlikely suspect. As Rios battles high-powered politicians and Ruiz himself, who are united in their desire to imprison him quickly, Rios must fight a more poignant battle to accept the departure of his lover, Josh, whose life is slowly being claimed by AIDS. There is a wealth of deftly wrought suspense in The Hidden Law, but the novel offers much more besides: flawless, moving prose, grittily realized depictions of inner-city LA, crystalline characterizations and, in Henry Rios, a compassionate, ingenious, and thoroughly convincing hero
