Summary
  • Two households, both alike in dignity, in fair Verona where we lay our scene, from ancient grudge break to new mutiny where civil blood makes civil hands unclean. From forth the fatal loins of these two foes a pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life whose misadventur'd piteous overthrows doth with their death bury their parents' strife. Written by William Shakespeare
  • Juliet is a Capulet and Romeo is a Montague. Romeo is pulled into the feud between the two families when Juliet's cousin. Tybalt, kills Romeo's friend, Mercutio. To avenge his friend's death, Romeo stabs Tybalt and is exiled from Verona by the prince. But Romeo and Juliet have already made plans to marry. Juliet meets Romeo at Friar Laurence's house, and the two are wed in secret They spend one night together, and then Romeo flees for Mantua, where the two hope they will soon be reunited. Because Juliet's marriage to Romeo is secret, her father unknowingly arranges for her to marry Count Paris. Juliet frantically seeks help from Friar Laurence to avoid bigamy (the offense of marrying one person while still legally married to another). The friar devises a plan to avert the second wedding. He gives her a sleeping potion to make it appear that she has died, for he has designed a strategy wherein Juliet can be reunited with Romeo in two days after the effects of the potion dissipate His plans are foiled, however, when a message informing Romeo of the sleeping potion scheme does not get delivered to him. Instead, Romeo believes the news that Juliet has died. He rides to her tomb and, desperate with grief, kills himself. When Juliet awakens, she finds Romeo dead beside her. Heartbroken, she stabs herself with his dagger and dies at his side. The terrible tragedy convinces the Montagues and Capulets finally to end their feud
